Activities for Within Word Pattern Stage
"I'm Out" (retrieved from Words Their Way 5th edition book)
Materials: Prepare a set of 10 or more cards from a unit of study such as words with a, a-e, ay, ai. Write the words at the top of the cards.
Procedures:
1. Deal all cards so each player gets the same amount.
2. The first player places a card down, reads the word, designates the vowel pattern. (For example: "rain, ai")
3. The next player must place a card down with the ai pattern and read it aloud. A player who does not have a word with the ai pattern or reads a word incorrectly must pass.
4. Play continues until all players are out of the designated pattern.
5. The player who played the last card begins the new round, choosing a different card, placing it in the middle and stating what the new vowel pattern is.
6. The object of the game is to use all the cards in your hand.
Picture Sorts for contrasting long and short vowels
Select picture cards for one short vowel and its corresponding long vowel. Prepare a board with headers that match the vowel (such as "short a" and "long a"). Model sorting several pictures by sounding out the word and deciding on the vowel. Have students sort the remaining pictures. Give the students their own set of pictures to sort independently.
